AfriWatSan held its 3rd annual workshop in Kisumu, Kenya from the 10th to 16th of July (2017) engaging with 40 stakeholders from the private sector (e.g. KIWASCO, WSUP), NGOs (e.g. Wandiege WatSan), government ministries (County Ministry for Water, Environment and Natural Resources, Ministry of Health), other government agencies (WRMA, LBDA) and allied research institutions (Great Lakes University). Hosted by the University of Nairobi, the workshop held lively discussions between stakeholders and the cross-disciplinary research team around the potential role of groundwater use and sustaining access to safe water in Kisumu, particularly to low-income, peri-urban communities.

Further there was a very constructive debate around the merits of different low-cost, on-site sanitation technologies and unanimous agreement on the need for greater emphasis by government, donors, and the development community on increasing the currently low access to improved sanitation. The outcomes of a systematic review of the impact of interventions in water supply and sanitation on health outcomes were presented and highlight the need to recognise health risks associated with inadequate access to safe water and sanitation beyond the traditional focus on diarrhoeal diseases.

The workshop included field visits to study sites in Kisumu at Wandiege, Nyamasaria and Mbeme where dedicated monitoring sites are being established by AfriWatSan as well as water projects at Kokelo, Gita and Kajulu. Specific days of the workshop were also dedicated to mentoring of post-graduate students, the presentation of new ideas to be considered by the team including the use of container-based sanitation systems, use of drilling logs to determine subsurface geology, and the use of tryptophan-like fluorescence as a means of real-time monitoring of faecal contamination of waterpoints. Finally, a writing workshop was conducted to assist post-graduate students, technicians, and early-career scientists to publish their research outcomes.
